SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Two newspapers discuss the tragic IAF helicopter accident in Romania, in which six IAF crew members and one Romanian officer lost their lives:

The Jerusalem Post
discusses the tragic Israel Air Force accident in Romania, and notes that the Sikorsky CH-53 helicopter that was involved in the crash has suffered numerous accidents since it first entered service with the IAF in 1969. The editor states that while the helicopter undoubtedly seems accident prone, one cannot ignore the fact that it is the IAF's most widely used transport helicopter. Furthermore, "It has probably seen more action than any other chopper, and accidents will always be a ratio of total flight time – the more the aircraft is in the air, the greater the chance for something to go wrong."  The editor concludes: "We mourn the loss of the brave, selfless IAF men, some of the very finest people this country has produced, who have paid the ultimate price to defend us. And we celebrate their achievements, the IAF’s achievements, in maintaining so overwhelming a role in our protection."

Haaretz discusses the recent Israel Air Force helicopter crash in Romania, and states that "The challenge before the IAF is striking a balance between carrying out missions and protecting airmen's lives, between achieving operational capacity and ensuring safety." The editor adds that "The air force can be counted on to spare no effort in determining what happened in Romania, and how best to minimize the chance of a similar disaster occurring again."

===============================

Yediot Ahronot
notes that, "We have learned, and we are still learning, that the Americans cannot abide even a small mistake in English, and there is nothing pleasant in our terrible accent.  They suffer in their anguish when facing our English speakers, but their hypocritical good manners prevent them from telling us their real opinion of the disaster that is called Israeli English."

Ma'ariv argues that, "The suicide killer phenomenon trickled from Israel to the Arab and Muslim world.  Suicide attackers sprouted in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and others.  Due to the internal threat, the best minds and sheikhs were recruited in order to excoriate the suicide attacker phenomenon and the legitimization which radical organization accorded it.  One of the beliefs which accelerated the spread of the idea of the jihad is the 72 virgins which became the wet dream of every suicide terrorist.  An important fatwa in this regard was issued by Pakistani Sheikh, Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, which forbade Muslims from committing suicide even for reasons of holy war.  With extraordinary courage, in a press conference broadcast live a few months ago, the Sheikh labeled the terrorists 'enemies of Islam' and determined that the place of suicide terrorists is in Hell."

Yisrael Hayom refers to the peace process and asserts that, "Since any agreement, or even unilateral move, would culminate in a settlement evacuation, it would be worthwhile preparing for it even now."
