SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Haaretz comments that foot-dragging in the political process plays into the hands of the region's extremists, as U.S. failure to restart the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue strengthens doubts about diplomacy's utility and boosts the temptation to replace it with violence:"Nine months after Obama appointed George Mitchell as his special envoy to the Middle East, the U.S. administration cannot point to any real progress toward an agreement on the Palestinian track. The Syrian and Lebanese tracks are similarly at a pre negotiations stage. Now is the time to move forward from mere handshakes to real action."
Yisrael Hayom maintains that "Only a determined America will be able to block the world's impeding danger, including the Muslim counties, from the rampaging of regimes of the type that now control Iran and North Korea. If the US of the 44th President continues to be caught up in its own delusions, 2009 and the following year will be recorded as a historic parallel to 1936 and the most terrible of wars which broke out afterward in 1939."
Nana10 avers that, "It would seem that the Goldstone report was only the warm-up to what is awaiting Israel at the United Nations General Assembly. The spurring on of a discussion on the report to an inquiry in the International Court of Justice in the Hague, another satanic speech by Ahmadinejad, a demand to cancel the ambiguousness of Israel's nuclear reactor, etc. These are only part of the renewed Arab-European hegemony against Israel, while the American administration remains quietly in the background."
Ma'ariv writes: "The court ruling, which was handed down by the High Court of Justice at the start of the month, concerning four petitions that were submitted about sections of the fence between Kalkilya and Tulkarm, concludes six long years of deliberations, which reflect both the development of the ruling as well as the unnecessary maladies that accompanied the building of the fence that was so necessary to the State of Israel. This section was constructed against the background of a wave of terrorist attacks, the despicable peak of which came during Passover 2002 at the Park Hotel in Netanya, and was required to be built on the security route, with prompt construction. But rather it was built along a route for the realization of dreams of annexation and real estate."
Yediot Aharonot opposes the privatization of Israel's major banks: "It is no coincidence that two banks, Leumi and Discount, did not rack up meaningful losses due to the financial crisis, as opposed to Bank Hapoalim which was privatized."
The Jerusalem Post quotes Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonowitz who described the brief jail term handed to underworld kingpin Michael Mor as "wind in the sails of lawlessness. Mor's case is one of the gravest in recent memory. This crime boss boldly threatened policemen and judges, but is allowed to walk out. The message this sends to fellow felons is ruinous."
