SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Two newspapers discuss the new investigation of PM Olmert:
The Jerusalem Post criticizes the police, Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz, State Attorney Moshe Lador and the legal establishment for the manner in which they are conducting themselves in the investigation of Prime Minister Olmert. The decision to authorize the police to pursue a completely new investigation on the eve of the 60th anniversary, embarrasses not just the premier, but the entire nation. The editor concludes by stating that no one should be above the law. But neither should anyone, not even an unpopular prime minister, be trampled by it.
Haaretz calls on Attorney General Mazuz to publish a statement on whether the new material concerning the investigation of PM Olmert justifies him to say that it is 'temporarily' impossible for Olmert to fulfill his duties.
Ma'ariv believes that, "The greatest challenge for the State of Israel, 60 years after it was established, is to see to it that the Arab milieu around us internalizes and accepts that Israel is a state of the Jewish People, a Jewish state." The editors aver that, "In the 60th year of its existence, it is important the national leadership not hesitate to make, in a loud voice, remarks similar to those made not long ago by a retired Supreme Court judge in an entirely different context – we will cut off the hands of whoever tries to threaten the destruction of the state of the Jewish People."
Yediot Ahronot laments that the Israeli Left, "has left the flag and symbols of Israel in the hands of those with a nationalist outlook, and the Israel's main symbol has become the symbol of a political movement." The editors add that, "The Left remains with an empty flagpole." The paper asserts that, "We must correct this injustice, which we fostered with our own hands," and declares that, "The Left must fly the flag, as a sign of nationality as the Left believes in it, as befits Israel on its 60th anniversary."
