SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Ma'ariv says that, "Despite opposition in the name of separatism by Arab MKs, thousands are volunteering monthly for National Service.  This is a deserving slap in the face to the leadership, and also a chance for integration."

The Jerusalem Post ponders the persistence of anti-Semitism, reflected in the discussions at the MFA's Global Forum, which ended on Monday after two days of discussions. The editor finds, however, that initiatives adopted at the Forum are not likely to dramatically increase activism against or awareness of anti-Semitism in the near future, and concludes that a world stage is the place to fight bigotry in all forms, starting with the oldest and most destructive of prejudices.

Haaretz states that while sanctions against Iran currently being discussed by the Security Council show do reflect an international willingness to cooperate in the face of the Iranian atom, this is only because of the weakness of the sanctions. However, with the US currently engrossed in the race for the presidency, it is not realistic to expect the world to embark now on a war for which, in its opinion, the time is not yet ripe. The editor by stating that "Israel's hope that international elements will deal with the Iranian atom for their own sake and spare Israel difficult decisions is liable to turn out to have been an illusion".

Yediot Ahronot refers to yesterday's Hamas-organized protest in Gaza and asks, "Could this be the first spark of popular opposition to violence?" and "Could it be that even Hamas's leadership has started to understand that one good protest is worth a thousand rockets?"

Makor Rishon-Hatzofeh claims that "Israel betrays its own allies" instead of nurturing and protecting them and provides the example of Israel's treatment of the South Lebanese Army.  The editors say that one should not wonder at the process of fundamentalism and nationalism amongst Israel's minorities, who are intelligent enough to read the writing…on the wall: It is not worthwhile being on the side of the Zionists."

[B. Michael and Ali Zahalkah wrote today’s articles in Yediot Ahronotand Ma'ariv, respectively.]
