SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Yediot Ahronot says that that radical settlers have stepped up their harassment of Palestinians in parts of Judea and Samaria and notes that Kiryat Arba Chief Rabbi Dov Lior has called for the expulsion of Arabs from Israel. The editors similarly note that Hamas leader Ismail Haniye has refused to budge from his organization's maximalist positions even as it continues launching Kassam rockets at Israel. The paper asserts that, "The leaders of the rejectionist fronts, -- both theirs and ours – know that the festive statements and the smiles at the Annapolis meeting, the commitments and the arrangements – are all written on sand. Today they are spoken, tomorrow they will be forgotten. The more genuine reality is that of [Kiryat Arba Chief Rabbi] Dov Lior and [Hamas leader] Ismail Haniyeh – the settlers' harassment and the terrorists' Kassams. In Annapolis, they dreamed; in Kiryat Arba and Gaza, they woke up."
Haaretz states that "More than ever before, the leaders who gathered at Annapolis this week appeared to want peace between Israel and the Palestinians, believing that time is short and that every passing day diminishes their power against the extremists in their own camp".
The Jerusalem Post discusses the debate that began this week on a reform package that seeks to reassert the legislature's standing. The editor states that the debate is a step in the right direction, but also indicates MKs are unwilling to go the whole way, concluding by hoping that "these reforms pass and are implemented, and they are harbingers of more to come."
Ma'ariv notes that today is the 60th anniversary of UN General Assembly Resolution #181 and avers that, "Only when one reads UN General Assemly Resolution #181, is it possible to realize how right the late Abba Eban was when he said 'The Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity." The editors remind their readers that had the Arab countries not rejected the resolution, which called for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside a Jewish one, "they could now be celebrating the 60th anniversary of another Arab state."
